Besides Best Bed and Breakfast, we could call this “Best Way to See What Those Grand Old Mansions Used to Look Like Inside.” The elegant but comfortable 4 East Madison Inn hearkens back to past centuries with its period décor but supplies all the essential modern conveniences like high-speed Internet access and an elevator (rare in B&Bs). Rooms are large and comfortable and rates are comparable to the downtown hotels, which certainly don’t offer amenities like complimentary gourmet breakfast in a secluded English garden, at a wrought iron-table next to a tranquil fish pond.
