Wells Discount Liquors

6310 York Road, (410) 435-2700,

Posted 9/19/2001

Do the folks at Wells ever get tired of doing their job so well? If so, it doesn't show. The gold mine at the county line remains the place for people who go to the liquor store with a shopping list, mixing the expansive selection and deep discounts of suburban booze barns with the navigability and know-the-regulars service of a neighborhood six-pack stop. We've spent way too much time lingering lovingly in the comprehensive and eclectically stocked beer aisles (latest find: half-pint bottles of obscure Czech lagers for 99 cents to $1.49) and soaking up advice from the knowledgeable wine managers (latest tip: the saucy, slightly sweet white Vouvray). But as our tastes have, ah, matured, we find ourselves increasingly drawn to Wells' broad stock of the hard stuff, from party-punch perennials to dozens of añejo tequilas, single-malt scotches, and single-barrel bourbons, at prices that make such indulgence a little easier to swallow. And pour. And swallow again.
