Sure, you can get a respectable corned beef on rye at a number of suburban outlets now, but not so long ago in our town delicatessen was synonymous with one place and one place only, a single block of East Lombard Street in Jonestown. Our mothers shopped there, our bubbies shopped there, and that's the place we go to recapture the glory days of deli. Why do people stand patiently in line or drive in from out of state for Attman's juicy corned beef or pastrami on rye? Top-quality eats, certainly, but the key for us is the countermen--cajoling, wheedling, wisecracking, a veritable floor show of showmanship that makes the wait for our Reuben rush by.
