If there’s a better blue-collar breakfast deal than Pepe’s current special—two hot cakes, two eggs, two slices of bacon, and coffee for $5.25—we don’t want to know about it. Our circulatory systems couldn’t take it. This Mount Washington greasy spoon, like its neighbor the Curb Shop bar a few blocks south, is a bit of working-class in one of Baltimore’s wealthiest neighborhoods. And every morning it serves cheap grub to residents and commuting uniforms, bureaucrats, and hard hats alike, all hunched over their coffees and papers and breakfast sandwiches, galvanizing themselves for the day to come. The food’s nothing to crow about—you’ll never find yourself gathering with friends here for brunch—but it’s certainly not bad, and while the griddle sometimes gets backed up, you won’t have to wait long for it. As far as that $5.25 breakfast special goes, the hot cakes, drenched in butter and syrup, are the highlight. They’ll fill your belly, and cure just about any hangover, if that’s what you’re looking for.
