Why We Go: The margaritas and never fancy, always filling Mexican food in the sociable and well-tended bar.

What We Eat: Tacos! Simple and cheap, we dig on every variety from the ground beef in a hard corn shell like Mom used to make to chicken in a soft flour tortilla. Burritos--or deep-fried chimichangas when we're feeling skinny--with black beans or grilled veggies and chicken, fully loaded nachos, and the taco salad are also solid bets. But whatever's on your plate, a side of guacamole is worth the price of a beer.

What We'd Change: Although the original restaurant side of HoFri seems like the best place to bring your family, it feels neglected. Spruce it up, amigos.
