It's strange to think a bar like Friends exists within a two-block radius of the Green Turtle or any of the many, many other bars in Fells Point that specialize in Miller Lite and next-morning regrets. Friends doesn't serve Red Bull or, it's safe to say, drinks involving Jell-O. Nope, this is just a good chill bar with fantastic food (the blackened catfish sandwich comes highly recommended), no attitude, and a real jukebox heavy on populist tunes (think Pixies, Clutch, and various above-ground indie fare). The space itself feels just about right--an inlaid ceiling, lots of dark wood surfaces and ornate carvings, and high ceilings give the place some history, while the wide-open main room ensures that this is a gathering-ground kind of bar. Those gathered seem to be an easy going bunch of twenty- and thirtysomethings ranging from groups of Fells bar-hopping regulars (see above) to dining couples to solo sports television watchers. And, surprisingly, for a summer evening, not a tourist in sight. The draft beer selection is above average, but prices seemed to be slightly above average as well--eight bucks for a Pilsner Urquell and a Yuengling was about a dollar more than we expected. But, we're willing to make that concession to have a safe refuge in Fells.
