We love fried seafood--clams, shrimps, scallops, you name it. So when we were driving through Pasadena and spotted a place we’d never noticed before called Scotty’s Seafood Express, we decided it was time for lunch. The place is fairly generic, a lunch counter/carry-out style joint serving a pretty basic menu: fried seafood (clams, scallops, fish, shrimp), steamed shrimp, seafood soups, and simple sides like macaroni salad, coleslaw, and french fries. We ordered a sampler platter ($14.95) for two, so we could get a little bit of everything: three healthy-sized fillets of lightly breaded fish, three large fried shrimp, and three juicy scallops served over a bed of crispy fried clams. For an extra $1.50, we ordered a side of fries, too. Now, it would be pretty easy for the proprietor of a place like this to just order pre-breaded frozen seafood, pop it in the deep fryer for a few minutes, and be done with it. But the thing we really liked about Scotty’s is that the stuff is breaded on premises and fried fresh. And you can taste the difference--no thick, salty batter overpowering the delicate flavor of a perfectly fried shrimp or scallop; no dry, crusty taste to the clam strips. The only thing we wish we could have had, that would have really made our day, is fresh, homemade fries. Yeah, it’s labor intensive to cut your own potatoes, but when the seafood tastes so crisp and fresh, it’s kind of a downer to couple it with a side of crinkle-cut frozen spuds.
