4607 Harford Road, (410) 426-1161, grindoncafe.com
This quaint Harford Road coffee shop has emerged as an invaluable Northeast Baltimore stop for early morning bagels and Zeke's coffee, but don't pass on trying out its other fare: the café's chill vibe and cozy dining area make it an ideal stop for a leisurely paced lunch featuring build your own sandwiches ($7.25) from a selection of breads, meats, cheeses, veggies, and condiments. A filling turkey on sourdough with lettuce, tomato, Gouda, and wasabi mayo arrived with tortilla chips, and that piquant mayo was a flavorful way of making a familiar lunch standby--the turkey sandwich--taste fresh and lively. It also added a little extra zing to a bacon sandwich on sourdough with provolone and spinach (which only ran $4.50, presumably because bacon was its only meat). A large, thirst-quenching glass of iced coffee ($1.75) provided a much needed afternoon caffeine jolt, and sitting near Grind On's front glass windows offered a view of Lauraville as people popped in for a quick to-go coffee or settled at one of the outdoor tables to take in some sun.
