More on Los Amigos Dos. | |
As you might guess, Los Amigos Dos is related to everybody’s favorite Hamilton Mexican/Peruvian joint, Los Amigos. The hardest-working family on the Baltimore restaurant scene is now at it in Towson, roasting up authentic pollo Peruano—Peruvian-style herb-marinated, flame-roasted chicken. And boy is it good. With moist, flavorful flesh under a smoky, slightly crisp skin, it’s simply perfect (and cheap: a quarter chicken, your choice of white or dark, plus one side and a small salad costs $4.95). It’s hard to choose just one of the uniformly excellent sides—the rich, flavorful refried beans with rice, the melt-in-your-mouth fried plantains, or the amazingly light yucca. Fortunately, you don’t really have to; mountainous extra servings of sides are available for $2.
Meanwhile, the lomo saltado ($11.95)—a mixed grill of beef strips sautéed with tomatoes and onions and tossed with French fries—takes some getting used to, but trust us, it’s excellent. Tacos de carne asada ($9.95) feature three jumbo soft corn tortillas bursting with grilled steak, aromatic and deeply flavorful. All the better to wash it down with one of the two homemade Peruvian juice drinks ($2) we can’t pronounce; purple is a spicy, intriguing extract from blue corn, and, orange, our favorite, tastes like mango, lemon, and flowers.
