Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1955 thriller is obviously from a bygone era: It’s carefully crafted, witty, and saturated with suspense instead of gore. The wife (Vera Clouzot) and the mistress (Simone Signoret) of a tyrannical schoolmaster (Paul Meurisse) conspire to kill him, and do, and dump his body in a murky swimming pool so it looks like an accident. All they have to do is wait for the body to float up. And wait, as a genial retired police inspector (Charles Vanel) starts asking questions. And wait, as disturbing rumors circulate among the schoolboys. And wait...
