Over the Hedge

By Joe MacLeod | Posted 5/17/2006

Yeah, itís another confusing hodgepodge lodge of pixel-powered funny animals living together unnaturally and struggling for survival, but this latest offering from DreamWorks, based on the newspaper comic strip of the same name, is thankfully more than just a default 96 minutes of respite from/distraction for any little grubby-fingered mall rats in your charge. Nope, this flick is snappy, well-paced, good times for anybody who can tolerate the animated movies, and features distinctive voice performances from the likes of Garry Shandling (cautious turtle), Bruce Willis (felonious raccoon), Steve Carell (mega-hyper squirrel), Wanda Sykes (sassy skunk), William Shatner (pussy-acting possum), and wet-gravel-rolling-in-a-whiskey-glass-from-the-bottom-of-an-open-grave-sounding Nick Nolte (nightmarish bear), with visual style nods to the classics for those who know/care. And, yeah, itís over the top, get it, pulling off a series of gripping, kinetic, bullshit-action-movie-style stunts featuring massive suburban property damage and a zero body count. Plus: Squirrel minus nuts plus energy drink equals laughs.
