The Hurt Locker earned director Kathryn Bigelow an Oscar, but her 1987 Near Dark is what will keep her name immortal. A near stunning combination of Western and vampire flicks, Dark takes place in windswept, dusty, small-town Oklahoma, where young Caleb (Adrian Pasdar) meets Mae (Jenny Wright)--who bites him, introducing Caleb to her family of vampires, which includes surrogate father-figure Jesse (Lance Henriksen) and the nearly feral Severen (Bill Paxton), who go around feeding at night. Cinematographer Adam Greenberg shoots Dark as if a classic Western, while the Tangerine Dream soundtrack imbues the movie with a genuine sense of eerie tension. Plus: includes one of the best dive bar scenes ever. Finger licking good.
