Why aren't there more farces made about con artists? Despite TV overexposure (it's on cable what seems like every 10 seconds), the ubiquitous Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remains a laugh riot. Scoundrels, a remake of/improvement upon 1964's Bedtime Story, pits a distinguished gigolo/master grifter (Michael Caine) against an upstart small-time hustler (Steve Martin). Caine's Lawrence Jamieson fleeces wealthy, gullible vacationers, who finance his lush lifestyle and his posh villa on the French Riviera. While depositing loot in Switzerland, he runs into Martin's crass Freddy Benson, who follows Jamieson to his seaside turf and threatens to cut in on his action.
