The Cookout

By Joe MacLeod | Posted 9/15/2004

Queen Latifah wrote this, and she has some fun in the role of an overzealous and highly ineffective rent-a-cop with a gold toof in a high-toned suburban gated community which has a new resident, a No. 1 NBA draft pick (Quran Pender) who’s spending the money he hasn’t got yet and adjusting to all the leeching that goes along with being a high-profile success. But there’s too much stuff here, and sure, there’s a coupla laughs, but we’ve seen it all before, and better: bourgie blacks (Danny Glover), boys from the hood with guns who want theirs (Ja Rule), curvalicious gold-diggers (Megan Good), big-booty multiple-MIA-baby-daddy ghetto rats (Denee Busby), goofy-ass white people (Jonathan Silverman, Farrah Fawcett), all thrown together at the healing family cookout. We feel like we shoulda just stood home and made devilled eggs or some mac ‘n cheese, y’know?
