The cutest little abandoned baby zebra is rescued and raised by a racehorse trainer, so of course our hero, l’il Stripes (voiced by Frankie Muniz), is gonna have some role-assignment issues, such as thinking he could get out on the track with some well-trained equine thoroughbreds and win a big horse race and impress a cute filly, non? And (of course) this is all tied into the story of the nice horse trainer dad (Bruce Greenwood) and his nice daughter (Hayden Panettiere), who are dealing with some sad dead-mom issues, while Wendie Malick is a big rich horsy-set bitch and M. Emmet Walsh is a track rat—you know, the human kind. Anyway, even at 94 minutes this pony drags its ass a little, but there’s a lot of animals to look at and talking-animal fun here for the kids thanks to the efforts of big-timers like Joe Pantoliano, Whoopi Goldberg, Dustin Hoffman, and Snoop Dogg, plus probably the world record for insect shit-eating and fart gags thanks to Steve Harvey and David Spade’s turns as a couple of dirty little computer-animated horse flies.
