Two words: German comedy. OK, one word: subtitles. No, wait, two words: accordion music. OK, OK, really, three words: unemployed German miners. Schultze (Horst Krause) struggles with mortality and loss of purpose after losing his job as a miner. Yeah, subtitles tend to negate any hint of ha-ha funny, and it’s necessary to approach this flick as foreign matter, but if you allow yourself to fall into the slow pace of forced retirement, you might get caught up in the story of a middle-aged workhorse who finds himself questioning his deliberate, perfunctory life, right down to the choice of songs he plays on his accordion.
