Monday, June 20

12:15 p.m. A man who runs a store in the 2700 block of West North Avenue near Coppin State College complained about a strange smell coming from a vacant house on the block. He assumed it was a dead animal. But when police officers investigated, they found Kevin Carmody, a 26-year-old Caucasian man, lying on the bathroom floor in an advanced stage of decomposition. Police initially found no signs of foul play but the autopsy revealed that Carmody had shot twice in the top of the head and twice in the face. This is the fourth homicide in the Coppin Heights neighborhood this year.

Tuesday, June 21

1:47 a.m. Milton Johnson, a 34-year-old African-American man, was at the corner of Pratt and Payson streets when a man came up to him and asked to buy a cigarette for 30 cents. Johnson wanted 35 cents. The two argued, and the man punched Johnson, who fell to the ground and hit his head. When the medics arrived Johnson refused treatment and walked home. He complained of headaches later that day but still didn’t want to go to the hospital. The next day, his family convinced him to go, taking him to Bon Secours Hospital. Doctors discovered that he had a fractured skull. His condition deteriorated, and he was transferred to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced brain dead. He was taken off life support June 23.

9:55 p.m. Police got a call for a car accident in the 4600 block of Coleherne Road in West Baltimore. On the way, they got another call for the discharging of a firearm. When they arrived on the scene, they found Darren Orrison, a 37-year-old Caucasian man, lying on the ground. Orrison and his girlfriend had stopped at the Shell gas station on Edmondson Avenue to get gas. While they were there, Orrison got out of the truck to talk to a man about buying drugs. Orrison got back in the truck, and the man pulled out a gun and shot him in the left side. Orrison passed out with his foot on the gas pedal, forcing the car onto Coleherne Road. It hit several cars before flipping over. Orrison was taken to Shock Trauma and pronounced dead at 10:38 p.m. Orrison is the 15th Caucasian man murdered in Baltimore this year—the total number of Caucasian men killed in 2004.

10:52 p.m. An hour after Orrison was shot, Brian Sampson, an 18-year-old African-American man, was in the 1200 block of West Lexington Street in Poppleton near Franklin Square.
