Losing Perspective

By Eileen Murphy | Posted 10/13/1999

The Sun's Perspective section used to be one of my favorite weekend reads, but editor Mike Adams (no relation to the Baltimore Press' Mark Adams) seems to be losing his touch. In recent weeks he's filled the Sunday-only section with colorless stories by Sun reporters, few of whom bring any "perspective" to their pieces. (I can't blame the staffers for trying to stay neutral; to retain their credibility, they really shouldn't be weighing in on events that happen on their beats.) Police-beat reporter Peter Hermann's Sept. 26 article on outgoing police commissioner Thomas Frazier was a straightforward piece of reporting that could have easily run in the A section; Erin Texeira and Gerald Shields' reflections in the same issue on the recent mayoral primaries added nothing to the discussion and probably shouldn't have run at all. On Oct. 10, under the guise of exploring the new world of cyber-romance, staffer Jo Bremer delivered a fawning love letter to her new husband; there was also an engaging but perspective-free story on sailing.

What happened? In this one-daily town, Perspective is the only place Sunday readers can turn for commentary on local and national news and politics. Instead, it's become the dumping grounds for staffers' "creative writing."
