Murders Dec. THIS WEEK: 6
Total Murders THIS YEAR: 269

Murder Ink did not run last week, so this issue’s column covers Dec. 23 through Jan. 8.

Friday, Dec. 23

9:21 p.m. Nigel Tyson, a 19-year-old African-American man, was found lying in a bathtub filled with water in his home in the 2600 block of Madison Avenue in Reservoir Hill. He had been stabbed to death.

Tuesday, Dec. 27

12:33 a.m. Cordell Hardin, an 18-year-old African-American man, went to the Westside Inn carry-out in the 300 block of South Bentalou Street in Carrollton Ridge. He had just ordered some food when someone started shooting at him. Hardin was shot in the forehead. Another man who was in the carry-out was hit in the neck. He managed to leave but collapsed a few feet away. Both men were taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where Hardin was pronounced dead less than five hours later. The other man was in critical condition but survived.

7:42 p.m. Alvester Rozier, a 79-year-old African-American man, was shot in the head while in his home in the 400 block of North Kenwood Avenue in McElderry Park. He was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died at 8:22 p.m. Gerald Reed, a 26-year-old African-American man, has been arrested for the crime. According to police, Reed tried to kill Alvester Rozier’s son, Mathaddeus Rozier, the day before. Police had requested an arrest warrant for the attempted murder for Reed, but the State’s Attorney’s Office denied the request based on contradictory witness statements and insufficient evidence.

9:40 p.m. Two hours later and three blocks away, Travis Harris, a 15-year-old African-American male, was shot at the corner of McElderry and Glover streets. He was taken to Hopkins Hospital, where he died the next day. Mathaddeus Rozier, the 25-year-old African-American man mentioned above, was arrested moments after the crime. Police believe that Rozier killed the teenager in retaliation for the murder of his father, Alvester Rozier.

11:30 p.m. Police officers were called to a home in Cherry Hill. Michael Dredden, a 19-year-old African-American man, was lying on the first floor of the house, bleeding from the shoulder and mouth. He told the police that he was shot in the 2700 block of Round Road and managed to get back to the house before he lost consciousness. Police followed a blood trail from the house to the scene of the crime behind two vacant houses in that block. Dredden was taken to Shock Trauma where he died the next day.

Saturday, Dec. 31

10:44 p.m. An off-duty police officer was in the 2300 block of Ashburton Street near Gwynns Falls Elementary School when he heard someone calling for help. He followed the sound and saw two men assaulting Dwight Watson, a 51-year-old African-American man. The attackers fled, and the officer followed. When backup arrived, police arrested two African-American males: 18-year-old Darryl Powell and 17-year-old Edward Holmes. An officer returned to help Watson, who had been stabbed, but he died before he could be taken to the hospital. Police say that Watson drove a hack cab and was stabbed during an argument with Powell and Holmes, who were his customers. This is the second murder of a hack driver in two weeks.

Sunday, Jan. 1

1:35 a.m. Stephanie Mills, a 21-year-old African-American woman, was having a New Year’s Eve party at her home in the 2400 block of Woodbrook Avenue near Druid Hill Park. A friend’s boyfriend showed up with several other people and started a fight. Mills tried to stop the fight, but she and a 36-year-old African-American man were both shot. Mills was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she died an hour later. The man survived.

9:50 a.m. Later that morning, a 49-year-old African-American woman’s throat was cut. The woman, Michelle Denton, was in the 300 block of West Fayette Street, downtown near the Charles Center metro station, when the crime happened. She was taken to Shock Trauma but died at 10:30 a.m. Denton’s murder was captured on crime-surveillance cameras posted in the area, and police arrested her ex-boyfriend Earl Holeman, a 37-year-old African-American man, and charged him with her murder.

11:35 a.m. An hour and a half later in Cherry Hill, police were flagged down by a woman who found a body in the woods in the 3400 block of Spelman Road. The body of Dahuan Jones, a 20-year-old African-American man, was face down by the railroad tracks. When police turned him over, they found numerous gunshot wounds.

9:25 p.m. Ronny Martin, a 16-year-old African-American male, was found sitting behind the driver’s seat of a Dodge Intrepid parked in the 2600 block of Marbourne Avenue in Lakeland, the neighborhood directly west of Cherry Hill. He had been shot in the head and was dead. Police have arrested Anthony Dickson, an 18-year-old African-American from Halethorpe, and Michael McFadden, a 16-year-old African-American from Bolton Hill, for the crime.

Tuesday, Jan. 3

12:30 a.m. Gregory Ball, a 25-year-old African-American man, was shot repeatedly at the corner of Booth and Carey streets near Hollins Market. He was taken to Shock Trauma. Ball died less than an hour later.

6:12 p.m. That night, police found the body of Vatell Murray, a 15-year-old African-American male who lived in a group home in Woodbourne-McCabe, in the CSX railroad tunnel under the 2600 block of Greenmount Avenue. He had been shot several times.
