Major disasters are hard to ignore, but the Chinese media may soon have to do so until they get the official OK. The Chinese government is contemplating fines of as much as $10,000 for any coverage of natural calamities or big industrial accidents without its say-so. (BBC)

A Freedom of Expression forum planned to coincide with the recent African Union Summit in Gambia was canceled a week beforehand by the Gambian government. (AllAfrica.com)

International terrorist Carlos the Jackal is suing one of the men allegedly involved in his 1994 capture. Carlos, aka Venezuelan national Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, filed suit against Philippe Rondot for "kidnapping and illegal restraint" after the former French intelligence agent recounted his role in bringing Carlos to justice in a recent newspaper interview. Carlos is serving a life sentence for multiple murders. (The Guardian/United Kingdom)

A windmill-studded energy-generating "wind farm" on the Norwegian island of Smola is being blamed for a sharp decline in a population of rare white-tailed eagles. The eagles, Europe’s largest predatory bird, have apparently been flying into the windmills’ spinning blades, including all of the eaglets born near the site after last breeding season. (BBC)

Researchers at the U.K.’s Newcastle University discovered that their colleagues in the school’s psychology department put almost three times as much money for their tea and coffee in the office "honesty box" when the list of suggested donations included a pair of watching eyes. (NewScientist.com)
