Murders This Year: 70

Despite a second week in a row with five homicides, Baltimore City shows a major decrease in murders compared to last year. There have been 35 fewer homicides in 2008 than at the same time in 2007. At this time last year, the city had already topped 100 murders.

The man shot to death on May 1 in the 4100 block of Newbern Avenue has been identified as Michael Wilson, a 23-year-old African-American man from Edmondson Village. The man found dead in the backyard of a house in the 2100 block of Orleans Street on May 4 has been identified as Tyrone Freeman, a 25-year-old African-American man.

Monday, May 5

1:14 a.m. Paris Richardson, a 21-year-old African-American man, went into a carry-out in the 2500 block of Hoffman Street in East Baltimore's Berea neighborhood. He ordered and took a seat on a bench inside to wait for his food. A man entered the restaurant with a gun and shot Richardson in the head and body. None of the other customers was shot. Richardson died at Johns Hopkins Hospital just before 3 a.m.

Tuesday, May 6

10:15 p.m. Kenneth Carter, a 17-year-old African-American male, was behind the 2900 block of Presbury Street in West Baltimore when someone started shooting at him. Carter ran, and the person with the gun chased him. He fired as Carter dashed onto Longwood Street and then into the 3000 block of Presbury, where he collapsed. He had been shot in the back and legs; Carter died at Maryland Shock Trauma Center at 2:15 a.m. on May 7.

Wednesday, May 7

5 p.m. Robert Johnson, a 39-year-old African-American man, was in the 1200 block of James Street near the B&O Railroad Museum in Pigtown. He got into an argument with several people. They started hitting him, and someone pulled out a knife and stabbed Johnson in the neck. He died at Shock Trauma half an hour later.

Friday, May 9

9:40 p.m. David Henderson, an 18-year-old African-American man, was walking in the 2800 block of Hillen Road near the Clifton Park golf course. Someone rode up to him on a bike, pulled out a gun, shot him, and rode away. Henderson died at Hopkins Hospital at 10:19 p.m.

Sunday, May 11

2:10 a.m. A woman dropped Timothy Swann Jr., a 27-year-old African-American man from Edmondson Village, off at Shock Trauma. She left him in a wheelchair in front of the emergency department doors and drove off before police arrived. Swann had been stabbed in the neck and died at 2:40 a.m. Police do not know where the stabbing occurred.


Darante Jones, a 19-year-old African-American man, was arrested April 11. Jones has been charged with robbery, murder, and attempted murder, for a March 27 shooting that injured an 18-year-old man and killed Tyrone Bahia, a 19-year-old African-American man.

Two arrests were made in the Feb. 15 murder of Jeff Payne, a 22-year-old African-American man from Virginia Beach. Payne was shot to death at a party in an apartment building near Morgan State University. Jason Allen, a 24-year-old African-American man, was arrested April 21, and Powerful Aguilar, a 23-year-old African-American man, was arrested April 30. Both were charged with Payne's murder.

Alex Simmons, a 20-year-old Caucasian man, was arrested on May 7 for the April 20 murder of Stanley Johnson, a 25-year-old African-American man. Johnson was sitting on some steps in front of a house in Brooklyn when he was shot in the head.

On May 5, Dominic Brown, a 27-year-old African-American man, was arrested at the Borgerding District Courthouse on Wabash Avenue for a double shooting that took place the day before. Sean Henderson, a 35-year-old African-American man, and another man were shot after they left a Belair-Edison bar. Henderson died.

Ronald Hinton, a 16-year-old African-American male, was convicted of first-degree murder and rape on May 6. According to the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office, on June 21, 2006, Hinton, then 15, raped and beat to death Ja'Niya Williams, a 4-year-old African-American girl. At trial he said he falsely confessed to the crime.

On May 9, Randy Golden, a 19-year-old African-American man, was convicted of the Jan. 9, 2007, murder of Melissa Stefanski, a 23-year-old Caucasian woman. According to the State's Attorney's Office, Golden shot his ex-girlfriend Stefanski once in the back of the head "in broad daylight in the middle of the street." A few days before Stefanski was shot, Golden, a Blood, told several people that he planned to kill her because he was angry that she had started dating a Crip and was selling drugs for that gang.
