3:15 p.m. Helen Reightler, a 43-year-old Caucasian woman, died 11 days after she was stabbed. On. Sept. 18, at 9:50 p.m., Reightler, who was homeless, was sitting on a bench near the intersection of Pratt and Charles streets in the Inner Harbor when a man came up to her. They got into an argument, and the man stabbed her in the neck. Edward Thornton, a 54-year-old African-American man, was seen running from the scene and was arrested and charged with Reightler's murder. Including Reightler's death, more women have been murdered in 2008 so far than were murdered in all of 2007, a year with a significantly higher homicide rate overall.
Tuesday, Sept. 30
2:31 a.m. Police found Michael Wilson, a 24-year-old African-American man, lying on the pavement in the 3100 block of Belair Road bleeding from the mouth. He had been shot several times and died at an area hospital half an hour later. Wilson is the eighth person to be murdered in Belair-Edison this year. Only Broadway East has had more 2008 homicides.
Thursday, Oct. 2
11:55 a.m. An unidentified man was discovered shot numerous times in the 700 block of Alleghany Place in Sandtown-Winchester. He was dead.
Saturday, Oct. 4
12:46 a.m. Police found William Haskins, a 32-year-old African-American man, sitting in the driver's seat of a car in the 1800 block of Penrose Avenue in West Baltimore's Franklin Square neighborhood. He had been shot repeatedly and was dead.
Sunday, Oct. 5
11:53 p.m. Craig Colvin, a 23-year-old African-American man, was shot in the head in the 3100 block of Virginia Avenue in Central Park Heights. He died at an area hospital at 2:29 a.m. the next day.
On Sept. 30, Marcus Pettiford, a 22-year-old African-American man, pleaded guilty to the murder of Tyrone Bonner, a 30-year-old African-American man. According to the Baltimore State's Attorney's Office, Pettiford and Bonner got into an argument on June 5, 2007, in the 1700 block of East 30th Street. Pettiford then pulled out a gun and shot Bonner repeatedly. Pettiford was sentenced to 50 years in prison, with all but 15 suspended. Terrell Bridget, an 18-year-old African-American man, was also arrested for the murder. His case is ongoing.
On Oct. 3, the Baltimore Grand Jury indicted Deandre Carroll, a 20-year-old African-American man, for the murder of Eugenio Harrison, a 19-year-old African-American man. According to the State's Attorney's Office, Carroll bumped into Harrison inside the kiosk at a gas station in the 2000 block of North Forest Park Avenue on Dec. 2, 2007. Harrison punched Carroll, who then allegedly shot and killed Harrison. Carroll was identified from video footage.
