Murders this Year: 36

The third fatal police-involved shooting of 2009 happenedon. Feb. 17. On officer, who is referred to in a statement of probable cause as officer McKissick, was on her way to a disorderly call in the 200 block of N. Lakewood Avenue. During her investigation, she came into contact with Joseph Forrest, a 61-year-old African-American man, in the 2600 block of Orleans Street. Forrest allegedly tried to get the officer's gun. While the officer was struggling with Forrest, his nephew (who is also named Joseph Forrest), a 45-year-old African-American man, appeared. The elder Forrest instructed his nephew to get the officer's gun. The nephew stepped on the officer's hand. While struggling with the two men, the original officer and a second officer shot the uncle, killing him. The nephew (whose last name was given as "Forrester" in a statement of probable cause, but was listed as Forrest by the public information office) was arrested.

Monday, Feb. 16

10:16 p.m. James Flanary, a 23-year-old Caucasian man, was standing outside in the 3900 block of Hanover Street in Brooklyn, when a group of males attacked him. They kicked and stabbed him repeatedly, then ran off. Flanary died at a local hospital an hour later. The next day, police arrested Charles Gray, a 28-year-old Caucasian man, and charged him with Flanary's murder.

Tuesday, Feb. 17

10:30 p.m. Rodger Evans Jr., a 24-year-old African-American man, was found lying on the ground in the 5600 block of Sagra Road near Good Samaritan Hospital. He had been shot in the head several times and was dead.

Saturday, Feb. 21

1:15 a.m. Hubert Dickerson, a 32-year-old African-American man, was shot numerous times in the 2500 block of W. Baltimore Street near the West Baltimore MARC station. He died less than an hour later at an area hospital.

2 a.m. Forty-five minutes later, José Escobar Peña, a 32-year-old Hispanic man, was stabbed in the stomach in the 3500 block of Eastern Avenue--the same block as Carlos O'Charlies. He died at a local hospital at 2:45 a.m. Peña is the second person to be murdered in Highlandtown in the first two months of 2009. He is also the sixth person to be fatally stabbed this year.

Sunday, Feb. 22

8:58 p.m. Police were called to the parking lot in front of the Greenspring Overlook Apartments, in the 2400 block of Loyola Northway near Cylburn Park. There they found a man lying on the ground who had been shot repeatedly. He died at a nearby hospital half an hour later and has not yet been identified. This is the second murder in the Greenspring neighborhood this year.


Two arrests have been made in the Aug. 31, 2008 double shooting that left of Reginald Carter, a 19-year-old African-American man, dead and a 24-year-old African-American man injured. Tylei Hull, a 21-year-old African-American man, was charged with murder, attempted murder, assault, and handgun violations on Feb. 16. Four days later, police arrested Wayne Brooks, a 19-year-old African-American man, and also charged him with the crime. On Feb. 17, Eric Little, a 29-year-old African-American man, pleaded guilty to murdering his younger brother. He was sentenced to 33 years in prison. On July 12, 2008, Little and his 17-year-old brother Calvin Ray got into a fight about living space at their home in the 3700 block of Liberty Heights Avenue. Their mother tried to break it up, but Little went into the kitchen, got a knife, and stabbed his little brother in the chest.

Dante Russell, a 26-year-old African-American man, and Cheryl Richards, a 26-year-old Caucasian woman, were indicted by a Baltimore City Grand Jury on Feb. 19 for the murder of Theodore Moore, a 44-year-old African-American man,. Moore was fatally shot in the 2000 block of Edmondson Avenue on Jan. 23.

Police arrested Grechauna Rogers, a 16-year-old African-American girl, on Feb. 19 for the murder of Petro Taylor, a 20-year-old African-American man. Taylor's badly burned body was found in Leakin Park on Dec. 30, 2008. He had been beaten to death in the 5800 block of Reisterstown Road. His body was then dumped in Leakin Park and set on fire.
