What's the 311?

By Chris Landers | Posted 8/5/2009

Next time you call 311 about a missed trash pickup, or your neighbor's parking habits, or the rats in your basement, take a second to remember the tireless dedication of our brave Baltimore City Call Center operators, who take questions ranging from the mundane to the insane. Here are some of the calls they handled in June:

June 2, 2009, 2:15 p.m. "Inquiring about how to dispose of bags of trash."

June 3, 2009, 8:17 a.m. "Citizen wanted info on a class reunion with Baltimore city school system."

June 3, 2009, 10:42 a.m. "Caller wanted an officer but realized he didn't need one."

June 3, 2009 2:48 p.m. "Citizen wanted to know how to get information on planting a garden."

June 10, 2009 1:02 p.m. "Caller was going to complain about the trash personnel, but changed her mind."

June 11, 2009 9:25 a.m. "Senior citizen resident is selling loose and packs of cigarette, cans [of] beer--Budweiser, cans of soda, lighters, fifths and miniatures of wine and liquor, and keeps one stack of money in his pocket and likes to flash it and he sometimes refuses to sell items to fellow resident. He also gives credit--this has been going on 3 years."

June 11, 2009 3:09 p.m. "Caller was reporting that her cell phone is being tapped or being monitored. Asked her how would she know that to be the case unless she's a subject of a police investigation, etc."

June 17, 2009 6:05 p.m. "Can I drop charges?"

June 26, 2009 2:31 p.m. "Citizen requesting info to send condolence to Michael Jackson's family."

Disclaimer: What's the 311 is based on data from the Mayor's Office of Information Technology (This time for June 2009). It has been folded, spindled, and mutilated along the way, and no attempt has been made to verify the accuracy of the calls. June 2, 2009: "Called about cat in tree, Neither Animal Control nor Fire Dep[artmen]t goes up there."
