The death of Gerrod Finch, a 21-year-old African-American man, has been returned to the homicide tally. According to charging documents, Finch was in a car in the 600 block of Wheeler Avenue with his girlfriend Tanaya Salter, a 21-year-old African-American woman. They were going to pick up Salter's son nearby. While in the car, Finch was stabbed in chest. He got out of the car, but collapsed on the corner and died. Salter originally told police that Finch was assaulted by a group of people while she was not in the car, but according to police her account was inconsistent with witness reports. Salter then said that Finch was assaulting her in the car and that she stabbed him in self-defense. According to charging documents, however, it was determined that Salter "had opportunity to exit the vehicle if she was in fear for her safety." On Aug. 17, she was arrested and charged with Finch's murder.
