Murders this Week: 5
Murders this Year: 210

The death of a man assaulted in 2002 was added to the homicide rolls this week. On Dec. 29, 2002, Larry Staton, a then-51-year-old African-American man, was at the corner of Parrish and Winchester streets in Sandtown-Winchester, when two men beat him severely. He never fully recovered from the beating and died at a nursing home on June 12, 2009. The Medical Examiner's Office ruled that his death was due to complications from the assault.

Tuesday, Nov. 24

1:45 p.m. People living in the 1400 block of Carswell Street near Baltimore City College heard a gunshot and saw a person run down the alley behind the block with a shotgun. Curtis Mitchell, a 28-year-old African-American man, had been shot once in the back. He died at a local hospital an hour later. This is the sixth murder in the Coldstream-Homestead-Montebello neighborhood this year.

Wednesday, Nov. 25

6 a.m. Angelo Dangerfield, a 21-year-old African-American man, was found lying in the 2800 block of Spellman Road in Cherry Hill. He had been shot in the chest, but was still holding on to his dog's leash. His dog was circling his body when police arrived. Dangerfield died at an area hospital at 6:26 a.m. A police camera caught Dangerfield walking his dog in the block, where he also lived. The camera panned away and when it returned, Dangerfield was on the ground.

12:35 p.m. Police were called to a rooming house in the 2400 block of Edmondson Avenue near the West Baltimore MARC station. Alexander Murrell, a 64-year-old African-American man, had not been seen or heard from for two days, so his family asked the landlord to allow them to enter his room. When they got inside they found Murrell dead with obvious signs of head trauma.

11:20 p.m. That night, two people were shot in the 500 block of Gold Street in Druid Heights. Julius Sullivan, a 36-year-old African-American man, and another 36-year-old African-American man were in the block when two people appeared and started shooting at them. Both men were hit and their assailants ran away. Sullivan, who was shot several times, died at an area hospital just before midnight. The other man survived.

The man shot to death in the 5100 block of Arbutus Avenue on Nov. 13 has been identified as Jose Chacon, a 35-year-old Hispanic man. Nine Hispanics have been murdered so far this year; six were murdered in all of 2008.
