Murders this Year: 22

Tuesday, Feb. 16

1:15 a.m. Daron Howard, a 21-year-old African-American man, was at his girlfriend's apartment in the 3200 block of Woodland Avenue when he got a phone call. After the call, he left his girlfriend's apartment and walked to the intersection of Woodland and Homer avenues where someone shot him in the face. He died at an area hospital at 1:36 p.m. This is the second murder in Central Park Heights this year. There was only one murder in the neighborhood in all of 2009.

Wednesday, Feb. 17

3:15 a.m. Adam Couther, a 27-year-old African-American man, was at a house in the 700 block of North Lakewood Avenue in East Baltimore with a group of people. Two men got into an argument with Couther's aunt over a Facebook page. Couther went into the living room to help his aunt and ended up arguing and then fighting with one of the men. The aunt got between them. She felt the man reach over her and then felt warm liquid pouring down her front. The liquid was Couther's blood. According to police, the man had slashed Couther's throat. The aunt and some friends tried to stop the bleeding and called 911, but Couther died at a local hospital an hour later. Montaize Alford, a 22-year-old African-American man who lived at the residence where the stabbing occurred, was arrested and charged with Couther's murder. According to the Investigative Voice, the aunt was being beaten by her boyfriend because a man "friended" her on Facebook.

12:30 p.m. That afternoon, David Scott, a 35-year-old African-American man, was found lying on the sidewalk at the corner of Presbury Street and Ruxton Avenue near Coppin State University. He had been shot numerous times and died at an area hospital at 1:10 p.m.

Saturday, Feb 20

2 a.m. A group of people got into a fight in front of the Bank of America building at Baltimore and Light streets in downtown Baltimore. James Ball, a 38-year-old African-American man from Windsor Mill who worked as a security guard, tried to break up the fight. He was shot several times and died at a local hospital at 2:40 a.m.

The man shot to death in the 1200 block of Bentalou Street on Feb. 7 has been identified as Rodney Stephens, a 38-year-old African-American man.

Two homicide arrests were made on Feb. 9. James Lee Fortune, a 34-year-old African-American man, was arrested for the Jan. 24, 2008, murder of Sidney Millner, a 25-year-old African-American man. Millner and another man were found shot on the floor of a liquor store in the 1100 block of North Stricker Street in Sandtown-Winchester. Millner died two days later. The other victim survived.

Dominic Rabey, a 26-year-old African-American man, was arrested the same day for the Jan. 19 murder of Raymond Gibson, a 21-year-old African-American man. Gibson was shot in the head during a shoot-out in the 1700 block of North Caroline Street in middle of the afternoon.
