Murders this Year: 56

As of May 2, there were 56 murders in Baltimore, compared to 75 on the same date in 2009. Despite the decline, the city continues to have a significantly higher per-capita homicide rate than neighboring cities. Baltimore has nine homicides per 100,000 people, compared to seven per 100,000 in Philadelphia, and five per 100,000 in Washington, D.C.

Monday, April 26

12:14 a.m. David Woods, a 31-year African-American man, left a bar in Pigtown and was walking in the 1200 block of Bayard Street when someone ran toward him with a gun. The gunman shot Woods repeatedly, killing him.

Tuesday, April 27

7 p.m. Dywane Majett, a 28-year-old African-American man, was shot numerous times in the 500 block of Chateau Avenue in Winston-Govans. He died at a local hospital half an hour later.

Thursday, April 29

11:07 p.m. David Mitchell, a 16-year-old African-American male, was found lying on the sidewalk at the Poe Homes public housing complex. Mitchell had been shot and died at nearby hospital soon afterward. Mitchell is the fourth child murdered this year.


The man fatally shot in a car in the 4100 block of Kenshaw Avenue on April 16 has been identified as Gavin Campbell, a 24-year-old African-American man. The man killed in a home invasion in the 1200 block of East North Avenue that same day was Branden Bowser, a 23-year-old African-American man.

Two people were arrested for the March 3 murder of Kenly Wheeler, a 29-year-old African-American man. Kwuantre Crudup, a 14-year-old African-American male, was arrested on March 18, and Avenette Dorsey, an 18-year-old African-American female, was arrested three days later. Wheeler was robbed and shot to death on the grounds of an elementary school.

Kevin Fulghan, an 18-year-old African-American male, was arrested on April 16 for the murder of Michael Holt. Holt was shot to death on March 22 in the 2600 block of Grogan Avenue.

Tavon Williams, a 25-year-old African-American man, and Byron Green, a 28-year-old African-American man, were indicted by a Baltimore City Grand Jury on April 23. Williams and Green have been charged with the March 12 murder of Donatello Fenner Jr., a 22-year-old African-American man. Fenner was shot repeatedly in the head in an alley in the 2600 block of North Calvert Street in Charles Village in the middle of the afternoon.

The mother of Javon Thompson, a 16-month-old African-American boy, who was intentionally starved to death by a religious group, was sentenced on April 21. Ria Ramkissoon, a 23-year-old woman whose race is listed as Indian in court documents, pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death last year and agreed to testify against the members of the alleged cult that ordered her son not be fed. Ramkissoon agreed to the plea deal stipulating that it would be stricken if her son rose from the dead. She was sentenced to time served and must continue to undergo psychiatric treatment. Queen Antoinette, a 41-year-old African-American woman and head of 1 Mind Ministries, Trevia Williams, a 22-year-old African-American woman, and Marcus Cobbs, a 23-year-old African-American man, were all convicted of second-degree murder for the child’s death and are awaiting sentencing.
