WYPR (88.1 FM) journalist Melody Simmons’ Jan 21 report of a low-income Baltimore family living in subsidized splendor in fancy-schmancy Mount Washington was diverting. It was also remarkably similar to a Sun story by Doug Donovan published two weeks earlier, using the exact same interview subjects. Coincidence?
For her part, Simmons says that she was out of town when Donovan’s piece ran and never read it. WYPR news director Fraser Smith tells the Nose that he wasn’t aware of the Sun report, but if there were such a piece, “that would have been our mistake. We probably should have referenced it.”
The former veteran Sun reporter and columnist adds, “We read TheSun pretty carefully around here.”
