Talking Artscape, murals, and moving on with BOPA's Gary Kachadourian

Frank Klein
Gary Kachadourian says he does some of his best thinking--and drawing--on the bus.
"Trash Container," one of Kachadourian's series of life-size prints he draws on paper then enlarges to mammoth scale.
A detail of "Motors Installation," a collection of doodle drawings Kachadourian has been creating since he was in junior high school.

CP: Ah. That's unfortunate.

GK: (laughs) That's fine.

It's kind of always the basic same process. It was way smaller in the old days. We actually had more interior space than we do now, because MICA had more gallery square footage when I started. They also had more available to us than they do now, because they have a lot of summer programs now. Before, they pretty much shut down in the summer. It's actually interesting in that we've kind of figured different ways to go more outside. We do outdoor sculpture, we do the outdoor installation show, we do other projects like the photo booth project with different photographers taking portraits and stuff, so you get a lot more of that kind of thing.

The food's become less visible because it's become placed . . .
