Talking Artscape, murals, and moving on with BOPA's Gary Kachadourian

Frank Klein
Gary Kachadourian says he does some of his best thinking--and drawing--on the bus.
"Trash Container," one of Kachadourian's series of life-size prints he draws on paper then enlarges to mammoth scale.
A detail of "Motors Installation," a collection of doodle drawings Kachadourian has been creating since he was in junior high school.

CP: How about illegal art, like graffiti?

GK: I'm a fan of wall art outside. I still work [for the city], so I don't condone vandalism. (chuckles) And I understand why some people have problems with it. If you're a person who has to paint the side of your building constantly, you would feel more anger toward the activity.

What's really interesting about illegal art is the difference between stickers and stencils and spray-paint graffiti. There's almost no anger toward stencils, cause when you see a stencil you figure there's a coffeehouse nearby, so you feel like you're safe. When you see a big spray-paint mural, you figure there's a junkie around the corner, so you feel scared. So everybody hates the spray-paint stuff.
