Talking Artscape, murals, and moving on with BOPA's Gary Kachadourian

Frank Klein
Gary Kachadourian says he does some of his best thinking--and drawing--on the bus.
"Trash Container," one of Kachadourian's series of life-size prints he draws on paper then enlarges to mammoth scale.
A detail of "Motors Installation," a collection of doodle drawings Kachadourian has been creating since he was in junior high school.

CP: Well, I meant go back to school.

GK: Yeah, and I'm still of the--I guess it's old school by now--but of the opinion that jobs like mine are actually jobs that artists get to support their art making. And it actually was true. I don't know if it's as true anymore, but it used to be that, everybody was an artist . . . you tried to do your 40 hours a week and [then] you tried to go home and make art. And some people would get, like, more professional and they'd become real curators or real hard-line administrators. Maybe they'd go into museums or go into running spaces or into the fund-raising part. I've always stayed in the programs, because once you go fund-raising, you can't [make art too]. Once you actually have to find money for your programs . . .
