Pennsylvania Ballet: George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 24-29, Kennedy Center 2700 F. St. NW, Washington, (202) 467-4600, kennedy-center.org, $47-$150. The Pennsylvania Ballet performs this classic dance interpreted by Balanchine, best known as the godfather of modern ballet (but pre-jazz hands) so expect something a little different but dressing up for the drive.

The Nutcracker, 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday Dec. 4-6, Hippodrome Theatre, 12 N. Eutaw St., (410) 837-7400, france-merrickpac.com, $29-$79. The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre performs an early 1900's version of this Christmas standard, moving the story to Mount Washington in Pittsburgh, and featuring a Heinz delivery truck and Kaufmann clock. Is Clara heir to the Heinz fortune?

The Cracked Nut, 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Dec. 5-6, Howard County Center for the Arts, 8510 High Ridge Road, Ellicott City, (410) 480-1686, hocoarts.org, $5. The Kinetics Dance Theatre presents its take on the nut show, infusing jazz, hip-hop, swing, synchronized swimming, and humor.

The Nutcracker, 6 p.m. Dec. 5, 2 p.m. Dec. 6, Mid-Atlantic Center for the Performing Arts, 194 Hammonds Lane, Brooklyn Park, (443) 438-4525, chesapeakearts.org, $20, seniors and students $18. Travel back in time to one of the greatest known, and certainly most delicious, Russian fairytales.

This performance of the world's most popular candy-filled ballet includes a pre-performance Sugar Plum Party on Sunday. Your sweet tooth is calling.

The Baltimore Ballet Company dancers and students perform alongside special guest dancers from the American Ballet.

The Case of the Missing Nutcracker, 7 p.m. Dec. 19, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, 801 Chase St., Annapolis, (410) 280-5640, mdhallarts.org, $40. Assist the Ballet Theatre of Maryland in cracking the case of the missing nutcracker, with live music from the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Great Russian Nutcracker, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 1 and 5 p.m. Sunday Dec. 19-20, Lyric Opera House, 140 W. Mount Royal Ave., (800) 745-3000, nutcracker.com, $24.50-$84.50. Moscow's greatest ballerinas twirl, pounce, and shimmy in concert with Baltimore musicians.
