Multitasking (For Mike Brenner)

Third Place

By Dyane Fancey | Posted 12/2/2009

Multitasking

Is how bizarre things end up in the freezer:

Car keys, wallet, medications that can be stored on the shelf.

Be here,

Here, now

And aware of your surroundings.

Don't read your paper while you breakfast--

Enjoy the toast, the plums, the coffee

As they were meant to be

--as food,

A sort of dawn-time sacrament

Not fuel shoveled into some

Overheated engine.

Who are you in a hurry to meet?

Death?

Don't worry.

He'll keep his appointment.
