Shards of Love

Poetry - First Place

By Rebecca Motil | Posted 6/27/2001

The potter sorts
the night's firing
separating the whole
from the cracked;
the mind says we should choose
lovers in just this way
but the heart takes up
shards of love
and pieces them together:
a slow, painstaking work
that requires glue and tears
(heed the sharp edges,
the bloody fingers)
sometimes happens
fast and thoughtlessly
sweat-slicked bodies
locked tight
as a puzzle
your method
you'll always see
the cracks)
still the blood sings
a siren song; it
whispers that
we two can re/pair
