ATTRACTIONS
Annmarie Garden on St. John, Solomons, (410) 326-4640, free. Annmarie's mission is to "contribute a background for reflection, appreciation, and the search for personal peace." Well, it may not do that for you, but the sculptures and flowers sure do look pretty.
Calvert Cliffs State Park, Lusby, (301) 872-5688, $3 suggested donation. This place looks gorgeous online and most definitely even better in person. You can hike, walk, picnic, fish, and send the kids off to hunt for fossils.
Calvert Marine Museum, Solomons, (410) 326-2042, $3-$6. This museum has boats, models, paintings, woodcarvings, aquariums, and fossils. Plus, there is a recreated salt marsh outside. What's a salt marsh? Go find out.
Cove Point Lighthouse, accessible via shuttle bus from Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road, Solomons, (410) 326-2042. You always hear about lighthouses in movies, but who actually visits one? This lighthouse, built in 1828, is the oldest continuously working lighthouse in Maryland and deserves some visitors.
Vera's White Sand Restaurant and Marina, 1200 White Sands Drive, Lusby, (410) 586-1182. Read all about her and her palace in the swell story by Blake DePastino in this very issue of Sizzlin' Summer. Umkay? Umkay.
EVENTS
Arts Alive! Art Show and Sale, noon-6 p.m. May 30, Solomons, (410) 326-6951. Support some artists from around the region. The artists will be there so you can ask them questions about where they get their inspiration. It's all original art and original is way better than those prints at museums, right?
Bar-B-Que and Flea Market, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. July 12, 5400 Mackall Road, St. Leonard, (410) 586-1716. Flea markets alone are great. You can find some amazing gifts for cheap, but add some barbecued chicken and well, it just sounds like such a great combo.
Children's Day On The Farm, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. June 1, Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, St. Leonard, (410) 586-8501. Teach your kids about farming so that they don't think everything just appears in the grocery store. It sounds fun too, with the promise of tractors, farm equipment, crafts, food, farm animals, a magician, a storyteller, and music.
Peach Festival, noon-6 p.m. Aug. 16, 5400 Mackall Road, St. Leonard, (410) 586-1716. Fresh local peaches with homemade ice cream. Going to this event with a significant other would be a scene straight out of a movie. And if you don't like peaches--and who doesn't like peaches--there are hot dogs and sloppy joes.
SPORTS & RECREATION
Calvert County Lions Annual Golf Tournament, all day June 2, Twin Shields Golf Course, Dunkirk, (410) 495-2092. Go play some golf on this par 70 golf course. With water coming into play on seven holes, it'll be a good, yet fun, challenge.
Guided Canoe Trips, July 20, American Chestnut Land Trust, Port Republic, (410) 586-1570, $10 donation requested. This sounds like a good trip for a couple--be it father and son, or boyfriend and girlfriend, or girlfriend and girlfriend--to enjoy some nature and some old-fashioned physical activity.
Jousting Tournament, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 30, Port Republic, (410) 586-0565. Who hasn't dreamt of jousting or at least thought that it looks cool in those movies set in medieval times? Think Sir Lancelot and Heath Ledger. Not only is there an actual tournament, but there is a country supper, so wear your best suit of armor.
Sunshine 1-Mile Run, 7 a.m. July 12, Cove Point Park, Lusby, (410) 586-1101. Almost anyone can run one measly mile. Go do this with your family. Maybe you could walk it with grams. She'd probably love to see you.
SHOPPING
J D Antiques & Collectibles, Chesapeake Beach, (410) 257-6762. Antiques are great and antique shops are rather plentiful in Calvert County. The hard part is deciding which one you like best. Start off with J D's and work your way to Willetta's.
Lazy Moon Bookshop, Solomons, (410) 326-3720. You gotta love a place with the word "lazy" in its name. It's got over 20,000 used, rare, and out of print books ready for you to lazily browse through.
Willetta's Antiques, North Beach, (301) 855-3412. Maybe Willetta and J D are pals? You'll never know or find out unless you go there.
