ATTRACTIONS
The Gordon Roberts House (History House), Cumberland, (301) 777 8678. We betcha you haven't seen and/or toured a house that was built in 1867 for a while, if ever. Tours are given on the hour Tuesdays through Saturdays, so go check it out.
Spruce Forest Artisan Village, 177 Casselman Road, Grantsville, (301) 895-3332, www.spruceforest.org. The Village is like a museum but deluxe because you get to experience the past. For example, you can peer into Appalachian folk life, observe actual artisans at work in log cabins, and purchase their hand-crafted work.
EVENTS
Art in the Park, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. July 4-5, Deep Creek Lake State Park, Discovery Center, (301) 387-7067. Local artists including wood turners, potters, painters, and basket makers demonstrate and sell their work. Vendors sell food and drinks while a band plays Appalachian music throughout the day.
McHenry Highland Festival, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. June 7, Garrett County Fairgrounds, McHenry, (301)-387-3093. This festival is all about celebrating the culture of our friends in England, Scotland, and Ireland. It includes a variety of activities such as bagpipe bands, Celtic vendors and crafters, sheepdog demonstrations, a dancing competition, a British car show, and more!
SPORTS AND RECREATION
American Cancer Society Relay for Life, 5:30 p.m. Friday through 11 a.m. Saturday, June 13-14, Southern Garrett High School track area, (301)-387-3049 or (301)-533-4295. Cancer is terrible and there aren't many ways average people can help tackle the problem except for events like this. So, get involved by walking around a track for half an hour or so.
Deep Creek Lake State PArk, 898 State PArk Road, Swanton, (301) 387-4111, The Deep Creek Lake rocks and so does the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center, and the Deep Creek Lake hardwood forest.
Mountain Bike Trek, 9 a.m. June 12, New Germany State Park, (301) 895-5759. Aren't you tired of hearing about how sedentary Americans are? Why don't you prove them wrong and get outside with some pals, a son, daughter, wife, or anyone and trek your bikes through the park and into Savage River State Forest.
Savage Reservoir Canoe Trip, 5-7:30 p.m. Aug. 1, Savage River Reservoir, (301) 895-5759. This canoe trip is an evening one. Thus, you won't die from heat exhaustion and can more readily enjoy this August night while gliding down the river. Sounds idyllic, right?
Western Maryland Amateur Golf Tournament, Aug. 15-17, Oakland Golf Club, (301)-334-3883. This tourney is open to all male amateur golfers. Maybe you don't want to play, are just a fan, or female. Well, that's okay. Go, watch, and get a tan.

Book Market & Antique Mezzanine, 111 S. 2nd. St., Oakland, (301) 334-8778. This place has books, antiques, and vintage items that would be perfect as a gift, or to add to your collection of cool things.
Bunny Hop, 2132 Friendsville Road, Friendsville, (301) 746-4426. This place specializes in custom floral patterns and pine furnishings. With a name like Bunny Hop, it's too cute not to go there.
Red House School Country Mall, 3039 Garrett Hwy, Red House, (301) 334-2800. A former elementary school, the Red House now features a ton of antiques, Amish goods, and crafts from over 100 vendors. It's like a one-stop-find-something-completely-original-homemade-and-interesting store.
