ATTRACTIONS
Concord Point Lighthouse, Foot of Lafayette Street, Havre de Grace, (410) 939-1498. Do lighthouses remind you of that Disney movie Pete's Dragon? That movie was great, and thus lighthouses are great and you should go visit this one since it's one of the oldest in continual use on the East Coast.
Havre de Grace Decoy Museum, Havre de Grace, (410) 939-3739. Have you ever heard of a decoy museum? Isn't your interest sparked? What is this place?
Ladew Topiary Gardens, 3535 Jarrettsville Pike, Monkton, (410) 557-9466. This is one of those gardens where all the shrubbery is shaped into animals or some cool shape. Have you ever seen Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control, a documentary by Errol Morris? Well, watch it and then go to this garden. You'll appreciate it even more.
Plumpton Park Zoo, 1416 Telegraph Road, Rising Sun, (410) 658-6850. After you're done looking at the shrubbery animals (see above) you can look at some real ones at the Plumpton Park Zoo. What a great name, by the way. Go ahead, say it again. Plumpton.
EVENTS
Basket Bingo, 6 p.m. June 7, Jarrettsville VFW Post, (410) 557-4629. Who doesn't want to play Basket Bingo?
Darlington Blueberry Festival, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 19, 1212 Main St., Darlington (410) 734-0480. There are fresh blueberries, baked goods with blueberries in them, jams made of blueberries, jellies made of blueberries, and we're pretty sure that that one girl from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that turned into a blueberry is going to be there.
Darlington Herb Festival, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 7, Shuresville Road, Darlington, (410) 836-9138. No! Not that herb! Sheesh, you're terrible. This festival honors herbs, as in herbs and spices. Plus, it's got flowers, antiques, floral crafts, storytelling, entertainment, and refreshments. Of course, if you go to this, you might be late for basket bingo.
Havre de Grace Art Show, Aug. 16-17, Tydings Park, Havre de Grace, (410) 939-9342. More than 250 artists and craftsmen show off their stuff. If you like art or maybe you just have a thing for artists, this is the place for you.
Jazz and Wine Festival, June 22, 501 Churchville Road, Bel Air, (410) 638-4565. Honestly, this sounds really cool. Listen to some jazz outdoors while sipping wine. This would be fun as a girl's night, family night, or as a date. For real.
SPORTS AND RECREATION
Cal Ripken World Series, Ripken Stadium, Exit 85 off I-95, Aberdeen, (410) 297-9292. The Cal Ripken World Series is moving to Aberdeen. Watch a bunch of boys ages 12 and under battle it out for the championship. You can bet one of them is actually 13 years old and a big scandal will ensue.
Rocks State Park, 3318 Rocks Chrome hill Road, Jarrettsville, (410) 557-7994. This place looks gorgeous. Check it out if you don't believe us. Go to www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/central/rocks.html. Or wait a sec, you could actually go there and check it out in person. And while you're there, hike, canoe, and fish.
Sporting Clays Event, 9 a.m. registration, July 12, J & P Hunting Lodge, Sudlersville, (410) 939-3739. Have shotgun will travel.
Summer Fun Day with Lawnmower Races, noon-5 p.m. July 13, Steppingstone Museum, Havre de Grace, (410) 939-2299. Now this sounds like a great event--lawnmower races, ice cream eating contests, frog jumping, and turtle races (BYOP--or Bring Your Own Pet), and that's just naming a few of the contests. Who knows? Lawnmower racing, with enough support, could become an Olympic sport one day.
SHOPPING
