Queen Anne's County
Queen Anne's County Department of Business and Tourism, 425 Piney Narrows Road, Chester, www.qac.org, (410) 604-2100.
ATTRACTIONS
Kent Island, (410) 604-2100. You can tell people that you are going to visit an island. Islands sound exotic. Back in 1631 Kent Island was founded as a key outpost for trading. Nowadays it's still pretty cool.
Queen Anne's Museum of Eastern Shore Life, 126 Dulin Clark Road, Centreville, (410) 758-1419. If MC Hammer made up a song about this place, he'd sing "Go Queen Anne, Go Queen Anne, Go!" Maybe the kids should stop playing video games and learn something about the Queen Anne's Eastern shore life. Go!
Wright's Chance, 119 South Commerce Street, Centreville, (410) 604-2100. This early plantation house was restored by the Queen Anne's County Historical Society.
EVENTS
Kent Island Volunteer Fire Festival, July 27-Aug. 2, Kent Island Fire Dept., Stevensville, (410) 643-5638. First, all the proceeds benefit the Volunteer Fire Department. Second, they've got a parade, games, food, special rides, and fireworks. Third, if the fireworks make anything catch on fire, you've got a bunch of firemen to put it out.
Wings and Wheels for Sight, 10 a.m -4 p.m. June 7, Bay Bridge Airport, Stevensville, (410) 827-7544. Three words: remote controlled airplanes. For once in your life, you can control an airplane. Not to mention they've got antique and classic cars and airplanes on display.
SPORTS AND RECREATION
Grabacrab Charters, 433 Kent Narrows Way, Grasonville, (410) 758-1837. This is one of those places where the name fools you. These charter boats are meant to catch rockfish, perch, trout, and bluefish. Bait, tackle and licenses are provided, which is always nice.
Native Shore Hunting Preserve, 800 Grange Hall Road, Centreville, (410) 758-2428. This place has guided releases. The animals they release include mallards, pheasants, quails, chukars, and Hungarian partridges. What's a chukar?
Sea Dux Outfitters, 115 Pintail Road, Chestertown, www.seadux.com (410) 778-4362. So, if pheasants and Hungarian partridges (see above) aren't what you want to hunt, this place specializes in waterfowl hunting and charter fishing. Go get some old squaws and scoters.
SHOPPING
Backyard Billy's, 202 Drummer Drive, Grasonville, www.gymsets.com, (410) 643-8800. If the name Backyard Billy's isn't enough to lure you in, just listen to what they've got --Amish-crafted stuff like swingsets, gym sets, playhouses, gazebos, and furniture. Where does one sign up?
The Pawn Outlet, 6612 Ocean Gateway, Wye Mills, www.pawnoutlet.onweb.com (410) 827-4445. Pawnshops are cool for many reasons, but this place is not only a pawnshop, it's also a flea market. It's got things from jewelry to power tools to computers to cell phones (maybe you'll find that old phone that you thought you lost) to antique tools.
