INFORMATION

Conference and Visitors Bureau of Montgomery County, 11820 Park Lawn Drive, Rockville, (301) 428-9702.

ATTRACTIONS

Brookside Gardens, 1800 Glenallan Ave., Wheaton, (301) 949-8230, www.brooksidegardens.org, free. Fifty acres of public gardens and conservatories, a visitors center, and a reference library with thousands of volumes on plants and gardening.

Dennis and Phillip Ratner Museum, 10001 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, (301) 492-6282, www.ratnermuseum.com. This museum is not about Dennis and Phillip, but rather the Bible-related artwork they have collected.

F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Burial Place, St. Mary's Church, Veirs Mill Road and Route 355, Rockville, (301) 762-0096. Far from their Bolton Hill home in Baltimore, these two icons of the Roaring '20s now rest peacefully in Rockville. Stop by and say hi.

Kunzang Palyul Choling Temple, 18400 River Road, Poolesville, (301) 428-8116. www.tara.org. The 72 acres this Tibetan Buddhist temple sits on include walking trails and 28 sacred monuments. The temple itself includes a room in which they've been praying for peace for 15 years. It hasn't worked yet. Stop by any Sunday at 10 a.m. for meditation and a buffet lunch.

EVENTS

Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, 8 a.m.-midnight Aug. 9-17, Montgomery County Agricultural Center, Gaithersburg, (301) 926-3100. There are county fairs and then there are county fairs--this one is the biggest in the state.

Silver Screen Under the Stars, dusk July 18-21, Georgia Avenue and Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, (301) 565-7300. Drive-in movie theaters may be dying, but free outdoor summer film fests are thriving. This one, just four nights long, shows classic and contemporary movies. Bring a blanket and a picnic basket.

Strawberry Festival, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 1, Sandy Spring Museum, 17901 Bentley Road, Sandy Spring, (301) 774-0022, www.sandyspringmuseum.com. You know summer is here when the strawberries ripen, and this annual festival says hurrah for that with berries plus entertainment and games.

SPORTS & RECREATION

Bohrer Park, Summit Hall Park, 506 S. Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg, (301) 258-6350. Water fun, mini-golf fun, and skating fun.

Fantasy Flights, 1617 Glenallan Ave., Silver Spring, (301) 417-0000. Your fantasy flight might be in a jet bathroom with Jennifer Lopez or Enrique Iglesias, but that's a whole other kind. These fantasy flights are in a basket hanging from a big balloon.

SHOPPING

Old Town Kensington Antique Row, Kensington, (301) 933-3750, www.kensingtonantiquerow.com. Eighty antiques and specialty shops, all in a row.
