Queen Anne's County

Posted 5/22/2002

Queen Anne's County Department of Business and Tourism, 425 Piney Narrows Road, Chester, (410) 604-2100.

Kent Island, (410) 604-2100. The Kent Island Heritage Society's headquarters is a good place to start a visit to this island bordered by the bay, the Chester River, and the Kent Narrows. And don't miss the Old Stevensville Post Office and Christ Church, Maryland's oldest congregation.

Queen Anne's Museum of Eastern Shore Life, 126 Dulin Clark Road, Centreville, (410) 758-1419. As you race across the Eastern Shore flatlands on the way to the ocean, ever wonder what life is like for the folks who live along the way? Stop and ask them, or visit this museum full of artifacts about the region's agriculture, seafood industry, transportation, homes, etc.

Train Station Museum, 101 Linden St., Sudlersville, (410) 438-3501. Sudlersville's claim to fame is that baseball great Jimmy Foxx was born and raised in this farming community. At the Train Station Museum you can learn about Foxx, and Sudlersville, and trains.

Wheat Harvest Fair, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 29, Wye Grist Mill, Wye Grist, (410) 827-6909. This annual rain-or-shine event is a little different than most summer festivals, what with its ox-cart rides and reenactments of Revolutionary War and Civil War battles.

Grabacrab Charters, Harris Crab House, 433 Kent Narrows Way, Grasonville, (410) 758-1837. The name is cute but misleading--these charter boats are for reeling in rockfish, trout, perch, and bluefish, not crustaceans. Bait, tackle, and license are provided--you just bring money and good luck.

Native Shore Hunting Preserve, 800 Grange Hall Road, Centreville, (410) 758-2428. The words "hunting" and "preserve" might seem odd together, but in any event Native Shore offers guided-release hunting of mallards, pheasants, quails, and chukars.

Tuckahoe State Park, Queen Anne, (410) 820-1668. Hiking, mountain biking, and a two-mile fitness course.

Chesapeake Antiques Center, Queenstown, (410) 827-6640. If you don't like what you see upon entering the Chesapeake Antiques Center, keep looking. This showroom houses a variety of dealers, so there ought to be something somewhere that pleases you.

Paul Reed Smith Guitars, 380 Log Canoe Circle, Stevensville, (410) 643-9970. Electric guitars are made here, and you can buy one, or just take a tour of the facility (call ahead for the latter).
