Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, 2145 Key Wallace Drive, Cambridge, (410) 228-2677. The refuge's 21,000 acres of varied habitats--from dense woodland to open water--serve as a haven for nesting bald eagles, Delmarva fox squirrels, and other endangered species, plus plenty that are doing just fine, such as opossums, otters, ducks, and ospreys. Biking, hiking, fishing, and boating are available.

This weekend festival on the bank of the Choptank River features carnival games, food, beer, lively activities for kids, and nightly outdoor concerts. On the Fourth, view the Great Morris Park's fireworks show right across the water.
