ATTRACTIONS

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, 2145 Key Wallace Drive, Cambridge, (410) 228-2677. The refuge's 21,000 acres of varied habitats--from dense woodland to open water--serve as a haven for nesting bald eagles, Delmarva fox squirrels, and other endangered species, plus plenty that are doing just fine, such as opossums, otters, ducks, and ospreys. Biking, hiking, fishing, and boating are available.

Brannock Maritime Museum, 210 Talbot Ave., Cambridge, (410) 228-6938. Dorchester County is proud of its maritime heritage, and the Brannock Museum helps preserve that heritage with a collection of water-related artifacts.

Cambridge Lady Cruises, Cambridge Creek, (410) 221-0776. Cruise along the Choptank River and its tributaries to see what inspired James A. Michener to write his epic novel Chesapeake.

Horn Point Environmental Laboratories, tours by appointment, 2020 Horn Point Road, Cambridge, (410) 228-8200. Horn Point is a real education in environmental studies--there is an aquaculture hatchery, interactive exhibits abound, and the nature trails give you a chance to apply your newly acquired knowledge.

Bay Country July Fourth Festival, July 3-7, Sailwinds Park, Cambridge, (410) 228-1000. This weekend festival on the bank of the Choptank River features carnival games, food, beer, lively activities for kids, and nightly outdoor concerts. On the Fourth, view the Great Morris Park's fireworks show right across the water.
