Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, (301) 387-4386,

Spruce Forest Artisan Village, 177 Casselman Road, Grantsville, (301) 895-3332, This living museum maintains 12 historic structures including the scenic Casselman Bridge and an 1835 log cabin. Nine artisans are hard at work here; you might catch them by chance, or you can make an appointment to watch as they woodwork, weave, stain glass, and such. You can also buy the fruits of their labors.

McHenry Highland Festival, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 2, Garrett County Fairgrounds, McHenry, (301) 334-1948. Immerse yourself in the cultures of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brittany, and England for a day. There is much more to it than Guinness--for instance, watch the very best compete in athletic, dance, and solo and band piping contests while wearing plaid wool.

Summer Festival and Quilt Show, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. July 12-14, Spruce Forest Artisan Village, 177 Casselman Road, Grantsville, (301) 895-3332, Take your favorite aunt to this annual quilt show held in an air-conditioned church on the grounds of the Spruce Forest Artisan Village, and she will probably buy lunch. Features include artistically rendered fabric on display and for sale, hourly door prizes, and a premiere quilt reception (July 11). If you plan to enter a quilt, submission and registration happens from noon-5 p.m. July 9.

Western Maryland Truck Show, Aug. 25-26, Grantsville Town Park, Grantsville, (301) 689-0070, Along with the trucks, this show features Jennerstown Speedway's Mark Smith, and proceeds benefit the Dove Center, Garrett County's domestic-violence and sexual-assault resource center.

Starlite Motel, Oakland, (301) 334-8686. There are times on the road--think Thelma and Louise--when you just want HBO and Denny's.

For a little more, try one of these B&Bs:

Albert's House, Accident, (301) 746-8655.

Blackberry Ridge Cottage, 13556 Westernport Road, Grantsville, (301) 724-8550. Make a reservation at Blackberry early, since it is next to New Germany Park and Savage River Forest.

Elliott House Victorian Inn, 146 Casselman Road, Grantsville, (800) 272-4090, Ask for one of the three cottages with a view of the Casselman River when calling this restored 1870 Victorian B&B.

Oak and Apple, 208 N. Second St., Oakland, (301) 334-9265.

Savage River Inn, Dry Run Road, McHenry, (301) 245-4440,

Walnut Ridge, 92 Main St., Grantsville, (888) 419-2568,

Deep Creek Lake State Park, 898 State Park Road, Swanton, (301) 387-5563. Deep Creek Lake wins the award for Maryland's largest freshwater lake and offers a wealth of water sports, including water-skiing, swimming, fishing, and sailing. The park's maturing northern hardwood forest, mostly oak and hickory, is home to many wildlife and plant species; fabulous trails take you to destinations such as the top of Meadow Mountain. The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center has hands-on environmental exhibits to help you appreciate the wondrous surroundings, and there is a restored, historic coal mine and homestead.

Deep Creek Sailing School, Deep Creek Lake, (301) 387-4159. Learn how to navigate Deep Creek the way God intended: quietly, powered only by the wind.

Double G Ranch, McHenry, (301) 387-5481. Double G offers the necessities--showers, a laundromat, a grocery and supply store--and a little entertainment out in the wild too with an arcade, volleyball court, and driving range.

Golf Club at Wisp, Deep Creek Lake, (301) 387-4911. At the base of the Wisp ski slopes, this course's terraced design eliminates steep hills and offers 18 holes of challenging play. Five water hazards, 90 grass and sand bunkers, and a lovely stone fountain at the last hole make these greens unique.

Laurel Highlands River Tours, (800) 472-3846. Offering whitewater rafting in Western Maryland and neighboring Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Western Trail-Riding Stable, Oakland, (301) 387-6155. Horseback riding is fun anywhere, but especially on the scenic trails of far-west Western Maryland.
