This living museum maintains 12 historic structures including the scenic Casselman Bridge and an 1835 log cabin. Nine artisans are hard at work here; you might catch them by chance, or you can make an appointment to watch as they woodwork, weave, stain glass, and such. You can also buy the fruits of their labors.

There is much more to it than Guinness--for instance, watch the very best compete in athletic, dance, and solo and band piping contests while wearing plaid wool.

Take your favorite aunt to this annual quilt show held in an air-conditioned church on the grounds of the Spruce Forest Artisan Village, and she will probably buy lunch. Features include artistically rendered fabric on display and for sale, hourly door prizes, and a premiere quilt reception (July 11). If you plan to enter a quilt, submission and registration happens from noon-5 p.m. July 9.

The park's maturing northern hardwood forest, mostly oak and hickory, is home to many wildlife and plant species; fabulous trails take you to destinations such as the top of Meadow Mountain. The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center has hands-on environmental exhibits to help you appreciate the wondrous surroundings, and there is a restored, historic coal mine and homestead.
