ATTRACTIONS

Historic St. Mary's City, (301) 862-0990, (800) 762-1634. This national historic landmark was Maryland's first capital, from 1634-95. Attractions include a replica of the square-rigged Dove (one of the two ships that brought the first settlers and supplies from England), the reconstructed State House of 1676, the Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation, and the Margaret Brent Memorial Garden.

Patuxent River Naval Air Museum, Route 235 and Shangri-La Drive, Lexington Park, (301) 863-7418. The nation's only museum dedicated to naval aviation research, development, testing, and evaluation.

Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Park, Piney Point, (301) 769-2222. For $100: What lighthouse, circa 1836, was the first permanent lighthouse built on the Potomac River and is the only remaining accessible lighthouse on its original location in Southern Maryland? Located on the banks of the Pauxent River, this 300-year-old Tidewater plantation was recently designated by the White House Millennium Council as an American Treasure. The grounds include an 18th-century manor house and 19th-century slave cabin.

St. Clement's Island-Potomac River Museum, Colton's Point, (301) 769-2222. Traces the history of the area and life along the Potomac River.

St. Francis Xavier Church, Compton, (301) 475-9885. The oldest Catholic Church in continuous use in English-speaking America.

EVENTS

Country Heritage Festival, June 3-4, County Fairgrounds, Leonardtown, (301) 884-3024. Living-history demonstrations, an antique tractor pull, crafts, entertainment, food, and games fill out this two-day event.

Children's Day at the Museum, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 10, St. Clement's Island-Potomac River Museum, Colton's Point, (301) 769-2222. Kids celebrate the museum's 25th anniversary with educational programs, a coloring contest, games, prizes, and pony rides.

Great Turtle Race, 6:30-9 p.m. June 16, Leonard Hall Recreation Center, Leonardtown, (301) 475-4572. Turtles race while kids ride ponies and roller skate.

Fireworks 2000, July 1, Dennis Point Marina, Drayden, (301) 994-2288. Get a three-day jump on July 4th with fireworks plus food and music.
