ATTRACTIONS

Boonsborough Museum of History, Boonsboro, (301) 432-6969. Exhibits include Civil War relics, weapons, porcelain, and pressed glass.

Crystal Grottoes Caverns, 19821 Shepherdstown Pike, Boonsboro, (301) 432-6336. Maryland's only commercial caverns offer a 30-minute tour deep into the ground.

Fort Frederick State Park, 11100 Fort Frederick Road, Big Pool, (301) 842-2155. View historic displays of the fort that was the cornerstone of Maryland's defense during the French and Indian War of 1754-63.

Washington Monument, Washington Monument State Park, Boonsboro, (301) 791-4767. This, the very first monument honoring George Washington, was built of stone in 1827 by the citizens of Boonsboro.

Wilson's General Store and One-Room Schoolhouse, Monday-Sunday, 14921 Rufus-Wilson Road, Clear Springs, (301) 582-4718. This restored store and schoolhouse was built in 1840s by Rufus Wilson. The schoolhouse looks like the students just went to recess. The store offers old-fashioned loose candy, baked goods, meats, homemade chips, hardware, and feed.

Maryland Symphony Orchestra 15th Annual Salute to Independence, July 1, 7:30 p.m., Antietam National Battlefield, Sharpsburg, (301) 797-4000. Enjoy light classical and patriotic music complete with live cannon volleys and fireworks.

Jonathan Hager Frontier Craft Days, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 5-6, Jonathan Hager House, 110 Key St., Hagerstown, (301) 739-8393. Music, food, and tours of the Hager House, the circa-1739 home of the town's founder.

Colonial Children's Weekend, Aug. 12-13, Fort Frederick State Park, Big Pool, (301) 842-2155 (reservations required). Do your children think they have it tough? Take them to this 18th century fort and show them how American kids lived in the 1700s.

Augustoberfest, Aug. 18-19, downtown Hagerstown, (301) 739-8577, ext.16, www. augustoberfest.or. This festival celebrates Hagerstown's German heritage.
