Our Favorite Things
This year's edition of Imprints is about those books, the Velveteen Rabbits of the literary world. It's about the books we most often recommend and most seldom allow out of our sight. We've indulged ourselves and written about the books and authors we're most passionate about, the ones whose names we bring up at parties only to meet with blank looks. As book-loving crusaders, we saw this as a chance to right some wrongs, to fight the injustice of literary obscurity.
Thus we present some of the best authors you've never heard of and some of the best books you've never read. Some enjoyed a day in the sun but have fallen out of favor for one reason or another. Others never received the attention we believe they deserved.
This supplement isn't just about our personal indulgences; we tried to include some news you can use. In case you want to read the books we recommend, we've noted the most recent publishing information. We've shed some light on why books go in and out of print. We even report on technologyoften portrayed as the greatest threat to the printed wordthat may make it easier to keep obscure titles available.
Just as we didn't create this supplement for ourselves, we didn't create it by ourselves. Besides the writers and artists who contributed to this issue, we're beholden to Lambda Rising bookstore and the Enoch Pratt Free Library for being there in our hours of need, to David Plunkert for his cover illustration, and to Sandy Asirvatham and Amanda Marshall for editing and research assistance.
