Cygnus Wine Cellars, 3130 Long Lane, Manchester, (410) 374-6395, The winemakers at Cygnus use grapes from four areas of Maryland and one in Pennsylvania to craft their signature wines. Only open on weekends so start planning to drink some local grapes during your next free one.
Farm Museum, 500 S. Center St., Westminster, (410) 876-2667, Before you eat at one of the latest chain restaurants in the county, stop by this place to remind yourself of how country county life used to be. After a self-guided tour of the 19th century farmhouse and its exhibits, that bloomin' onion will only taste sweeter.


American Music and Arts Festival, July 10-11, Farm Museum, 500 S. Center St., Westminster, (410) 857-2771,, weekend $38, Saturday $24, Sunday $18, ages 18 and under $10 a day, ages 5 and under free. Four stages including one for children, juried arts and crafts, and tons of ethnic food. On the live music tip: Arlo Guthrie, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Tom Chapin, and Etta Baker. Plus performances by Sankofa Dance Theater, Footworks, and Walt Michael.
Art in the Park, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 5, grounds of Westminster City Hall, intersections of Locust, Longwell, and Key streets, Westminster, (410) 848-7272. Sorta like Baltimore's Artscape, Carroll County style, with 60 artists participating in this juried art show, live music by the eight finalists in the Carroll Musical Talent competition, and kiddie craft activities and face painting.
Carroll County Farmers Market Christmas in July, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. July 10, Agriculture Center, 700 Agriculture Center Drive, Westminster, (410) 848-7748. Did your neighbor outdo you with the lawn decorations again last Christmas? Get an early start and perhaps even a deal on Santa and his reindeer, Mother Mary, and Baby Jesus.
Carroll County Farmers Market "Peach Festival," 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 14, Carroll County Farmers Market, Agriculture Center, 700 Agriculture Center Drive, Westminster, (410) 848-7748. Georgia peaches? Please, Maryland is doing just fine with its own. From peach pies to cobblers and cakes, summer feels peachy.
Old-Fashioned Corn Roast Festival, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 7, Union Mills Homestead, 3311 Littlestown Pike, Westminster, (410) 848-2288. Can't get enough corn? Don't miss your chance to fill up on it plus chicken, apple sauce, and tomatoes at this annual event that is becoming a part of Carroll County's history like the 18th century land where it takes place.
Strawberry Festival, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 7, Sykesville-Freedom Fire Grounds, Route 32 and Freedom Avenue, Sykesville, (410) 984-2448. A great way to get more than your daily serving of vitamin C while checking out crafts and keeping the kids happy with hayrides and games.


Cascade Lake, 3000 Snydersburg Road, Hampstead, (410) 374-9111, Enjoy the thrill of diving into water, but without the burning eyes chlorine guarantees. This 6-acre spring-fed lake features a high dive, water slides, and floating rafts. Just make sure you leave the dog at home.
Governor's Youth Fishing Derby, 6 a.m.-noon June 5, Piney Run Park, 30 Martz Road, Sykesville, (410) 795-6474. Can your kid catch fish and snag them fast? This may be her or his chance to shine and take home a prize or two. Prizes! For ages 15 and under.


Carroll County Summer Farmers Market, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays June 19-Sept. 4, Agriculture Center, 700 Agriculture Center Drive, Westminster, (410) 848-7748. This is your chance to know for sure where that food you buy comes from. Stop by every Saturday until September and enjoy the local produce, eggs, jams, honey, and other goodies.
