Best Bar, Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon Stable and Saloon
909 N. Charles St., (410) 685-7427
In our book, a good bar is one where you feel comfortable, a lively yet homey place with both a regular clientele and a welcoming atmosphere for strangers. The downstairs bar at the Mount Vernon Stable and Saloon fits that description well. And besides welcoming strangers, the Stable/Saloon makes all types of people feel at ease--you'll find men and women, blacks and whites, gays and straights. Plus the place serves a decent selection of draught beers; on a recent visit it offered 10. None of them could be called adventurous (Yuengling, Bass, Magic Hat #9, Dogfish Head Pale Ale), but we appreciate the variety. The food is darn good too, and it's served until late (try the crab soup of the day). Although the bar is rather small, there's usually a stool or two available; if not, try one of the really cool tables hidden around back--they're great for a private conversation or a secret smooch.
