Best Coffee Bar
A Common Ground
819 W. 36th St., (410) 235-5533
Given the proliferation of coffee shops, choosing the best has become a matter of finding the one that feels the least like a chain. It's all about atmosphere--like the feeling of hanging out in a neighborhood tavern. Substitute a cappuccino machine for a back bar full of booze and you've got A Common Ground, Hampden's neighborhood coffee pub. The low-key shop serves up a meet-and-greet for the locals and just a good cup of joe for the rest of us. Besides the usual mochas and lattes, A Common Ground also offers a selection of sandwiches, baked goods, salads, and prepared foods like hot soup and quiche. And the space is genuinely fun and funky: exposed brick walls, small tables, original artwork on the walls, and a surprisingly large selection of globes.
